50 HONEYMOON DESTINATION IDEAS BASED ON YOUR IDEAL DATE NIGHT

Planning a wedding is plenty of work all on its own, but it's often paired with planning the biggest trip of your lives, your honeymoon. Any honeymoon requires extra planning to make sure it's the memorable, romantic trip of your dreams. Plus, after years of forced cancellations or opting for scaled-back, mini-moons, couples are now shifting towards even grander mega-moon style trips. As incredible as these once-in-a-lifetime trips are, they can be a beast to plan.

Before you even start planning, it can be tricky just deciding where to go for such an iconic vacation. Let this list help you answer that question. I myself didn't know where I wanted to go, so I did mountains of research on a bunch of destinations (which I'm now passing along here). I started to realize that you really need to think about what you want your honeymoon to look like, keeping in mind it's supposed to be the ultimate trip for you as a couple. Sure, somewhere might be on your bucket list, but is it right for your honeymoon?

As I talked to friends about their honeymoons, both real and planned, I started to realize there were many, many flavors to pick from. I also started to see patterns for which types of couples were attracted to which types of trips. That's the core of this list.

Think about your favorite date night with your spouse. That's going to speak volumes about how you love to spend time together. Let that guide what types of destinations you should consider for your honeymoon!

SO, WHAT'S YOUR IDEAL DATE NIGHT?

Scroll down to see suggested destinations for each of these ideal date nights, where you can learn more about the destination, what to do, and where to stay - all keeping your personal brand of romance in mind!

DISCLAIMER:

As you read, keep in mind this post is all about exploring the art of the possible. These are some of the most extraordinary destinations in the world, and some will require more time and resources than you may be willing or able to spend. In a similar vein, the selected hotels are curated with a splashy honeymoon in mind. These aren’t the only options and many of these aren’t the places I would normally stay. These are the places I dream of staying, the places I feel have something that makes them particularly suited to a one-in-a-lifetime romantic trip like your honeymoon. This post is for dreaming. Reality can rear its ugly head later.

Last thing - I've listed many options for each destination here but for the sake of time, resources, or simply the flow of the trip, you'll probably have to limit how many you do. You won’t possibly be able to visit all of the suggested next stops for a destination, but you might consider creating an epic trip by adding one of them. The same applies for recommended things to do. You likely won’t make every stop listed, but they’re all things to consider. It’s also likely that there are many, many more you could consider, but I’ve tried to focus the suggestions on the destination’s “date night” theme.

BEING A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN TOWN BY EXPLORING MONUMENTS & MUSEUMS

5 DESTINATIONS FOR YOU

You like to learn about the world around you and hate to waste an opportunity to discover the history & culture of a place. You feel it’s most worth it to travel when you can explore the sense of place beyond the beach. Lucky for you, some of the most romantic cities in the world happen to be dripping in history.

TREVI FOUNTAIN ROME

1. ROME & FLORENCE

These two cities overflow with tradition and history - perfect for the culture-hunting couple. Rome and Florence have always found a starring role in the historical narrative ranging from the ancient world to the Renaissance to World War II and more. This means there are endless things to see and do. Just be careful not to stay in the museums the whole time. Explore the beautiful outdoors spaces, eat beyond delicious local dishes, and stroll the winding streets. Even if you've been before, there's always something new to discover, especially when you're living the ultimate dolce vita as newlyweds.

WHAT TO DO

Step back in time to Ancient Rome, exploring iconic sites like the Colosseum, Forum, and Pantheon, but also somewhat less-visited sites like Via Appia, the catacombs, the Baths of Caracalla, and more.

Get lost in museums. Between the Uffizi, Borghese, the Accademia, and the Vatican museums, you could easily spend your entire vacation looking at masterpieces. You'll want to break it up a bit, but take full advantage.

Visit the decadent St. Peter's Basilica and Square, the iconic Sistine Chapel, and the architectural marvel of the Florence Duomo, but don't ignore the cities' countless other treasure-filled churches.

Channel your inner Lizzie McGuire and take a romantic day trip to Tivoli to see the Villa d'Este and its elaborate, terraced garden filled with hundreds of gravity-fed fountains.

Eat your way through your trip, making a point to try iconic Florentine, Roman, and Italian culinary specialties like the "Holy Trinity" of Roman Pasta (cacio e pepe, carbonara, Amatrciana), Bistecca alla Fiorentina, pappardelle al cinghiale, Saltimbocca alla Romana, suppli, gelato, and so much more.

The city is synonymous with love, but it's also a heavy-hitter when it comes to history, the arts, and fine dining. Even the most cultured couple can still find something new (or an old favorite) to explore here. For an extra special honeymoon touch, add-on a few days in Champagne to explore the hallowed cellars of the iconic celebratory beverage. Romance is sure to be in the air as you toast to your new marriage.

WHAT TO DO

View Paris' most iconic landmark, the Eiffel Tower, in all its best looks - by the full light of day, backed by sunset, and sparkling at night.

Dive headlong into Paris' world-class deluge of museums; from the Louvre to the d'Orsay to the Orangerie, Rodin, Picasso, and more there's enough art to last a lifetime.

Dazzle at the 360-degree stained glass of Notre Dame's wildly underrated neighbor, Sainte-Chapelle.

Venture out of the city to see the expansive and extravagant Chateau de Versailles and its grounds. Giverny, Fontainebleau, and Chantilly also make great day trips.

After popping some bubbles on your wedding day, what could be better than exploring the beautiful vineyards & cellars of Champagne to see how they are made?

A little pocket of paradise, Napa Valley is densely packed with some of the world's top wine producers, indulgent hotels, and celebrated restaurants. With all that, you could easily hop from one luxury establishment to another, but it’s the rolling, vine-lined hills that put Napa on the map. SINGAPORE SUPERTREES

3. SINGAPORE

This small city-state packs a big punch when it comes to food. Of course it has the fine dining and Michelin stars you'd expect of this polished destination, but it's also famous for its cocktail scene and its UNESCO-recognized hawker centers where dishes perfected over generations are served from street stalls. Singapore owes much of its culinary magic to its position as a culinary crossroads; you'll also find these influences in its museums and historic neighborhoods. No matter how you choose to indulge, Singapore is sure to satisfy your honeymoon desires.

WHAT TO DO

Eat your weight in street food at the hawker centers. Given its position as a geographic and cultural crossroads, Singapore has become a culinary hub.

Dine in style at one of the nearly 50 Michelin Star restaurants (including multiple 3-stars).

Belly up to a chic cocktail bar whether you choose a newcomer mixing up creative concoctions or a classic like the Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was first slung.

Explore the city's gardens and nature. Nearly half of the city is green space with highlights like a UNESCO-listed tropical botanical garden, the National Orchid Garden, a night safari, or the aquarium. Even the airport has an iconic green space.

Admire the impressive architecture of the city. You'll see influences from the Colonial Era at spots like the National Museum & the Raffles Hotel. But, more modern sights like the flower-shaped ArtScience Museum, the glowing Supertrees at the Garden by the Bay, and the ultra-high rooftop pool at Marina Bay Sands have become some of the city's defining features.

Escape to a nearby island for a change of pace. Sentosa is known for a mix of relaxed resorts and fun theme parks while Palau Ubin is home to a taste of traditional Singapore.

Go back in time at one of the well-preserved medieval villages scattered throughout the countryside. Some favorites include Siena, San Gimignano, Volterra, Montepulciano, Montalcino, or Pienza.

Go for a dip in the steamy blue waters of the terraced natural hot springs at Saturnia.

Get your hands dirty by taking a cooking class to learn how to make a regional favorite like tortellini in brodo or tagliatelle Bolognese.
